About the Sanctuary

The Gothic classic architecture of Pilgrim Church, its red brick exterior, featuring the landmark bell tower, "speaks of permanence in the midst of passing." "They built better than they knew," wrote the Rev. William O. Wark, Pilgrim’s fifth pastor, on the occasion of the church’s 50th anniversary in 1937.

Stained Glass Windows

The cherished and acclaimed stained-glass windows that beautify the sanctuary were designed by artist J.R. Rudy of the Los Angeles Art Glass Co.

The north window portrays Christ carrying a sickle and a sheaf of wheat as the symbol of the bread of life. The angel of Resurrection is on the left and the angel of Prayer on the right.

This window is dedicated in memory of the Dole family that gave three generations of service to the church.

The south window depicts Christ, the teacher, holding the book, the Word of God.

The angel of Faith is on the left and the angel of Hope is on the right.

This window was given in memory of Dr. Lucien H. Frary, beloved second pastor of Pilgrim.

Paneling and Pews

Rich walnut paneling, trim and pews complete the warm interior décor. Over the years the sanctuary and the comfort of the worshippers have been enhanced by the addition of an improved lighting system, wall-to-wall carpeting, pew cushions, an enlarged choir loft, a modern public address system, a wireless hearing aid system and a new heating and air-conditioning system.
